Ep 44: Do You Say One Thing Then Do Another?

Phil’s Tax Hacks · July 2, 2020

Today’s Hack:

Are you risk-averse but then find out your portfolio is riskier than you want? Or do you say you want to retire but haven’t really prepared to do so? What other instances do you say one thing but do another?

Other Retirement Facts:

A lot of times we don’t even realize that we’re saying one thing but doing another. When it comes to our financial goals, it’s important that you understand what your actions mean and how they may impact your financial future. Are you prone to any of these scenarios?

For instance, sometimes we want to look for the best deal–at all costs. When you’re trying to get the most bang for your buck, consider what it is you’re paying for (or not paying for). What kind of fees are you paying for and is it worth it or not?

A lot of people say they don’t want risk but then an assessment with a financial advisor will reveal a lot more risk than you’d think. Do you understand the level of risk your portfolio has?

When it comes to caring for your spouse, of course you want them protected financially in case anything were to happen to you. But do you resist talking about long-term care insurance or life insurance? Or is your pension set up in a way that will be the most beneficial? Make sure to ask, “what happens if…?”

Working with an advisor can help keep your goals in check. From helping you see when you get off track and keeping you accountable to coaching you through decisions, an advisor is there to get you where you want to go. Do you want to retire early? Or leave a financial legacy? Instead of doing one thing and saying another, take the proper action to meet your goals.
