What Should You Be Asking Yourself During a Market Crash?

By Phil Putney, CPA/PFS · May 1, 2025

Market downturns can be emotional rollercoasters. The headlines scream panic, and it’s easy to feel like you need to “do something”—anything—to protect yourself. But before you react impulsively, take a breath and ask yourself a few important questions. These can help bring clarity and direction when the market feels chaotic.

  1. “When was the last time I checked my plan—and does it still make sense?”

Your financial plan is meant to guide you through all seasons—not just when things are calm. It should be flexible enough to adapt, but not so reactive that it changes with every market dip. If your long-term goals haven’t changed, chances are your plan hasn’t either. This is a good moment to revisit it with your advisor—not rewrite it out of fear.

  1. “Is my portfolio still aligned with my true risk tolerance?”

Market volatility has a way of exposing how much risk we’re really comfortable with. If the recent swings feel overwhelming, it may be a sign your portfolio was more aggressive than you realized. Rather than make knee-jerk moves, use this as an opportunity to recalibrate and find a better fit for your comfort level and goals.

  1. “Are there smart moves I can make right now?”

Down markets can create opportunity. This might be a good time to rebalance your portfolio, harvest tax losses, or continue your investment plan through dollar-cost averaging. These strategic decisions can add long-term value—even when things feel uncertain.

  1. “What should I stop doing right now?”

Turn off the noise. Stop doomscrolling. Avoid checking your account balance every hour. Most importantly, don’t make permanent decisions based on temporary emotions. In times like these, staying disciplined often outperforms trying to be brilliant.

Remember that market corrections are normal, but your response to them can make all the difference. Let these questions guide you toward a steadier, more confident path.
