Tailoring Your Financial Jersey for a Perfect Retirement Fit

By Phil Putney, CPA/PFS · August 1, 2026

Some financial decisions can be adjusted over time. Others are much harder to reverse once they’ve been made. That’s especially true in retirement planning, where timing and strategy can have long-term consequences.

One of the biggest irreversible decisions people face is when to claim Social Security. It can be tempting to start benefits early, especially at age 62, but that decision can permanently reduce your monthly income for the rest of your life. Many retirees don’t realize the long-term impact until years later, when changing course is no longer an option.

The same idea applies to pension elections. For those fortunate enough to have a pension, choosing whether or not to include spousal or survivor benefits is a major decision. Once those payments begin, the choice is typically locked in. A higher monthly payment today may sound appealing, but it’s important to think through how that decision could affect a surviving spouse later on.

Even life insurance can become an irreversible planning issue. Many people assume they can simply purchase coverage later if needed, but health doesn’t always cooperate with those plans. A diagnosis or unexpected medical issue can dramatically increase costs or make coverage unavailable altogether. Waiting too long can quietly close doors you didn’t realize were shutting.

And while investment decisions may feel more flexible, retirement itself changes the rules. During your working years, mistakes can often be corrected with time. In retirement, however, poor withdrawal strategies, unnecessary risk, or emotional decisions during market downturns can have lasting consequences because there’s less time to recover.

The good news is that irreversible decisions don’t have to be scary. They simply require thoughtful planning, careful analysis, and a clear understanding of how one decision affects the next. The more proactive you are before making these choices, the more confident you can feel moving forward.
