Don’t Make These Income Planning Mistakes

By Phil Putney, CPA/PFS · May 1, 2026

As retirement gets closer, the focus often shifts from saving and growing wealth to something much more personal: turning those assets into reliable income. That transition is where a lot of people unintentionally make costly mistakes. Income planning isn’t just about covering expenses today. You want to build a strategy that can support you for decades.

One of the biggest mindset shifts to make is recognizing just how long retirement can last. It’s easy to assume you’ll only need income for a short period of time, especially if family history or personal expectations suggest otherwise. But the reality is that many retirees spend 25–30 years (or more) in retirement. That means your plan needs to be built for longevity, not just the first phase of retirement.

Another common misstep is claiming Social Security too early without fully understanding the long-term implications. While it can be tempting to start benefits as soon as possible, doing so can permanently reduce your monthly income. Since this decision affects the rest of your life and potentially your spouse’s as well, it’s worth taking the time to evaluate your options carefully.

When it comes to generating income, many people default to bonds as the primary solution. While bonds can play an important role, they’re just one piece of the puzzle. A well-rounded income strategy may also include dividend-paying stocks, annuities, or even real estate investments like REITs. Each option has its own strengths and trade-offs, so diversification can help create a more resilient income plan.

Inflation is another factor that’s often underestimated. What feels like a comfortable monthly income today may not go nearly as far 15 or 20 years down the road. Without a plan that accounts for rising costs, retirees can find themselves slowly losing purchasing power over time.

Finally, it’s important to think beyond Social Security when building lifetime income. Relying on a single source can leave you vulnerable, especially in the event of a spouse’s passing. Creating multiple, dependable income streams can provide stability and peace of mind, ensuring that both partners are protected no matter what the future holds.

A thoughtful income plan is about instilling confidence. And getting it right can make all the difference in how you experience retirement.
